Engaging Education Consultancy

Emotional literacy (SEAL)

The DfCSF have now produced large quantities of materials for the Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning (SEAL). Primary and secondary schools recognise the value to pupils of these approaches and are often trying to find ways of incorporating them into the curriculum. This can be difficult because of the pressures on teachers of so many initiatives.

After discussions with staff a tailor-made course can be provided - at both management and teacher level - in a range of areas. Delegates will:

  1. gain an understanding of how pupils can be engaged and develop their maturity

  2. be aware of the advantages and disadvantages of the SEAL approach along with strategies that teachers can use in their classroom, without too much work, but that will engage the pupils and help them learn

  3. understand the links with personalisation, PLaTS and/or ECM so that each can be piggy-backed on the other, making them more effective with less time spent on each

Personal, Learning and Thinking Skills (PLaTS)

PLATS are complex and, although it is not obvious, different aspect of PLaTS require very different approaches. Some aspects can be taught in conventional ways, others cannot be ‘taught’ but classroom strategies used that enable pupils to progress.
After discussions with staff a tailor-made course can be provided - at both management and teacher level - in a range of areas.
Delegates will:

  1. gain a deep understanding of the different aspects of PLaTS

  2. be shown how pupils can engage with PLaTS and so become better learners

  3. be shown links with other agenda’s, such as SEAL and/or Personalisation

Boys and Girls learning together and teaching each other

The classroom is a much better place if the pupils get on well together and help each other learn. In co-educational schools boys and girls can be encouraged to learn together and help each other. Indeed, a recent research has shown that when Boards are comprised equally of men and women they are the most productive and innovative. I will show how pupils can be made to work together so that they:

  1. learn

  2. help each other learn

  3. gain an understanding of each other

  4. learn to resolve conflict

Science teaching and diversity

The KS3 science National Curriculum PoS contains a section on Cultural understanding.
I will provide a tailor-made course to enable teachers to understand:

  1. the principles behind racism

  2. how science teaching can incorporate racism

  3. how science teachers can promote Cultural Understanding in the classroom

Links with PLaTS and/or SEAL can also be covered.
